I study the factors that influence the use of carbon by aquatic consumers. My master’s degree research is conducted in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness here in Washington State. I rely on natural variation in the isotopic composition of carbon, nitrogen, and hydrogen in leaves, algae, and fish to estimate the importance of different habtiat types as source of carbon (aka energy) to fish. I love learning about how ecosystems work and I believe that understanding ecology is an important component of environmental stewardship.
