I am a research landscape ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center (FRESC) Cascadia Field Station (CFS) and an affiliate assistant professor in the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences  in the College of the Environment at the University of Washington in Seattle.  I am also a courtesy faculty member in the Department of Forest Ecosystems and Society at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.

My research focuses on quantifying and explaining spatial heterogeneity in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and identifying how scale of observation influences our understanding of ecological patterns and processes.  Much of this work involves the use of geospatial applications, such as remote sensing, spatial statistics, and geographical information systems (GIS), which I have developed from my background in geography and landscape ecology.
