Building Community in Meaningful Ways

Welcome back from sabbatical to Dr. Chelsea Wood, Future Rivers faculty advisor and Executive Committee member and now Associate Director and Graduate Program Coordinator of the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences! Future Rivers Elwha River Summer Institute

In late August, our 2022/23 Future Rivers trainees spent a week in the field learning about the Elwha dam removal and subsequent restoration efforts. The group shared toured the lower and upper dam removal sites, the mouth of the Elwha, and Lake Crescent; visited the Elwha Klallam Museum; watched and discussed the movie Return of the River with the Co-Directors; and heard from guest speakers representing the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, WDFW, NPS, and USGS.

Welcome Future Rivers 2023/24 Cohort!

This September, a record sixteen new graduate students – along with six new faculty advisors – will be joining our program as our Year 4 cohort, representing seven departments in four colleges across the University of Washington.

Dispatches from the Field

Our students and faculty are in the middle of a busy field season! As a few examples of their great work: Year 3 cohort student Claire Vaage led her first graduate career summer field survey team in the John Day River basin in Oregon, conducting kick-seine sampling for crayfish density estimates and snorkel surveys for steelhead fry.
