Our activities aim to help freshwater students become “T-shaped” – that is, possessing deep knowledge in their own specialization, but also able to effectively collaborate with various other freshwater-related disciplines. The events listed below facilitate cross-discipline collaboration, communication of new research ideas, and professional development.
Freshwater Exploration Series
The Freshwater Exploration Series is a unique interdisciplinary opportunity for graduate students who study freshwater-related topics from all disciplines–across the humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, and engineering—to come together and collectively learn about a designated freshwater topic as well as share related perspectives, aims, concerns, and methods of various research fields. We aim to do this through a diverse series of activities (1 per quarter) on campus and in the field, which also involve faculty, practitioners and the public.
For the 2018-19 school year, the Freshwater Exploration Series theme is “Dams in the Pacific Northwest.” This is the first-ever Freshwater Exploration Series, and we hope it will lead to future series on other intriguing freshwater topics in years to come.
The Freshwater Exploration Series is hosted by the UW Freshwater Initiative and the UW Simpson Center for Humanities. For more information, or if you have an idea for a future Freshwater Exploration Series theme, contact Claire Beveridge, email@example.com.
Data Science Drop-In Hours
Do you have a data science question or problem that you are trying to solve? Need to ask an expert? UW Freshwater Initiative and eScience Institute host weekly Data Science Drop-In Hours, Thursdays 9:30-10:30am, in eScience. Our experts can provide help on anything from Python to remote sensing, Matlab to hydrologic modeling. We can also help you find other resources that might address other data science questions (e.g., cloud computing, machine learning, etc.). If you know you would like to participate in Data Science Drop-In hours, it is highly encouraged that you email your questions to our expert beforehand. Contact Nicoleta Cristea, firstname.lastname@example.org.
