Job Announcement: eScience Program Specialist

The eScience Institute at the University of Washington has an outstanding opportunity for a Program Specialist (Job #152177). The eScience Institute’s mission is to support researchers across disciplines in developing and applying advanced computational methods and tools to real world problems. With funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation in 2013, and the Washington Research Foundation in 2014, we have been significantly advancing our mission. As we continue to grow our educational and outreach activities, we seek support staff to ensure these programs are meeting the needs of the campus community.

The eScience Institute is a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The successful candidate will be a resourceful self-starter who works well both collaboratively and independently. Must be detail-oriented, with strong organizational, planning, problem-solving, time management and stress-management skills. This position will have the working title of Program Specialist. The Program Specialist will need to be comfortable with ambiguity, have an ability to prioritize and manage a changing workload, remain productive during slow times and multitask effectively during busy times. Must be comfortable organizing meetings and outreach activities at multiple locations on and off campus and with colleagues from outside the university. To meet deadlines and to fit into an active academic research environment, a flexible schedule and the ability to work long hours will occasionally be necessary.

This position will provide program management support for the eScience Institute including the collection of metrics for regular evaluation of our programs. Working with Executive Directors, this position will design, schedule, and execute eScience program activities including conferences, meetings, 1-2 week training events, and outreach events. In addition, this position will take the lead in compiling metrics and analyzing data from program participation and evaluations.


•Bachelor’s degree in business, communications or STEM field and two years of project management and/or event management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

•Demonstrated ability to work independently, problem solve, take initiative, set priorities and handle multiple projects with competing deadlines efficiently and effectively.

•Proven experience working in a deadline driven environment.

•Strong written and oral communication skills.

•Effective and professional interpersonal skills to interact with diverse groups in a team environment.

•Proficiency with use of computers, Microsoft Office, Google Docs, electronic mail and Internet systems.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
